A very Happy Birthday to former President of the Republic of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki. I had the honour of working quite regularly with him and his office when I was starting out in my career. It seems some of the greatest thinkers, visionaries and most humble people of our time were born today, 18 June. I count myself amongst them of course 🙂
This will never be a political blog. I will just mention that his vision for a united Africa; efforts towards building social cohesion in South Africa; pioneering the developmental state agenda in earnest; introducing the idea of the Government Wide Monitoring & Evaluation System (implemented after he left & still in place today), as well as his macro-economic outlook on our development remain touchstones for me in various areas of my academic, professional & social discourse in life. He was also the only president in the history of our country to serve with a female Deputy President, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, who is now the Executive Director of United Nations Women.
