It has been a very busy time in the garden as we get ready for spring to come along. Hopefully we’ve seen the last of the winter frosts,Mao about two weeks ago we decided to plant our first spring vegetables. These three are varieties I have never tried before, and which seem like a fun spin on some old favorites. I say old favorites, but these are actually heritage varieties…did you know that carrots used to be originally available in all these colors before mass agriculture and commercialization?
1. Romancesco or “fractal” broccoli
2. Multicolor carrots
3. Purple cauliflower
Growing and eating these should be a lot of fun and I think they will make lovely gifts for friends and family, especially those with young children.
The cauliflower and broccoli are in a semi shade area that gets midday sun. I’m hoping this spring won’t be as scorching as last year, so that they have a chance to develop well (they don’t like too much heat). The carrots are out front in full sun.
